CNC TURNING SERVICES

What Is CNC Turning?

Turning is a popular manufacturing process similar to milling–both manufacturing methods shape a workpiece by removing material. However, in Turning, the workpiece is rotated on a spindle against a stationary cutting tool to produce the desired shapes.

The development of computer numerical control (CNC) was incredibly beneficial for this manufacturing process. As the complexity of new products has increased, the need for more accurate hardware also grew. Before CNC, this would have introduced problems like increased costs and production delays. Now, machine shops like Flinchbaugh can provide industries with a quick and reliable method for machining custom parts with precision.

Parts We Machine Using Precision CNC Turning:

How Do CNC Turning Centers Work?

There are a few essential components that all CNC turning centers share. Those are:

  • Tooling: Tooling is generally made from carbide and is the actual item that makes direct contact with the workpiece to remove material.
  • Chuck or Collet: This part of the machine secures the raw material to be machined, or shaped.
  • Spindle: This rotates the chuck or collet holding the workpiece so that the machining can be performed.
  • Turret: This vital part of the machine moves the tooling according to the controller program in coordination with computer-aided design (CAD) or computer-aided manufacturing (CAM).
  • Interface: This is the control panel computer where the operator controls and oversees the turning center(s).

For operators, the use and operation of a CNC turning center requires the following steps:

  1. Upload the appropriate CAD or CAM file.
  2. Load and secure the designated material onto the work holding – chuck or collet.
  3. Initiate the machining process via the interface or control panel.
  4. Oversee the machining process of the tooling, work holding, spindle, turret, and interface program.

Once the workpiece manufacturing is complete, the operator inspects the new products to ensure they are free of imperfections. Overall, the entire process is simple and efficient while providing accurate parts at the same time.

Benefits of CNC Turning Centers

With turning centers, your organization obtains several advantages, including:

Accuracy:

  • The precision of CNC turning is one of its most competitive benefits. By incorporating CAD/CAM files, CNC Turning lathes follow strict measurements and eliminate the waste of human error. This results in improvements to your finances, productivity, and more.

Flexibility:

  • CNC Turning centers are compatible with diverse applications and have a range of size capabilities. Flinchbaugh’s turning centers, for instance, come equipped in 18- to 0.5-inch diameters to match the needs of our clients, which include Fortune 500 companies.

Repeatability:

  • Because they can produce large product batches with unparalleled accuracy, CNC turning provides exceptional repeatability. This means our partners can maximize their output, reducing any losses due to errors in the batches. As a result, they’re free to invest your capital elsewhere.

Also, for operators of all experience levels, a turning center offers a minimal learning curve, optimizing training times.

Applications for CNC Turning Centers

In a variety of industries, CNC turning centers manufacture the following products:

  • Prototypes
  • Threaded Components
  • Rings and Spacers
  • Fittings
  • Shafts
  • Bushings
  • And more

If you're overseeing a complex component that requires precision machining via a turning center, our team can provide the quality of service you need.
