CNC MILLING SERVICES

What Is CNC Milling?

Milling is a typical manufacturing process in which a tool rotates against a workpiece to remove material and create the desired shape. The advancements of computer numerical control, or CNC, added a whole new dimension to the capabilities of milling machines.

Now, industries can expect improved precision and decreased imperfections when outsourcing their machining operations, including milling. Through CNC milling, which is similar to CNC drilling, machinists can cut material on up to five axes, producing previously unattainable shapes in much fewer operations than traditional manual methods.

Parts We Machine That Require Precision CNC Milling:

How Does CNC Milling Work?

CNC milling machines are available in vertical and horizontal models, which feature different spindle orientation, operations and components. However, all models have the same fundamental aspects:

  • Tooling: Shapes the product as material is removed.
  • Work Holding: Locks your material in place for machining.
  • Spindle: Grips and rotates the tooling across multiple axes.
  • Interface: Reads computer-aided design (CAD) or computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) files and controls the milling machine with operator input.

All CNC milling center operations also adhere to four core steps, including:

  1. Input the CAD or CAM document into a program.
  2. Install machining material (the workpiece to be machined) and the appropriate tooling for the operation.
  3. Launch the milling operation via the computerized interface.
  4. Inspect product quality post-machining.

While shaping the material into a product, the spindle or work holding will move across the Z, Y, and X axes to create the desired shapes. Multi-axis machines can even cross other axes as well for more complicated dimensions. Many milling machines also utilize an intuitive control display that provides faster adoption rates and fewer learning curves.

Advantages of CNC Milling

Like other types of CNC machining operations, CNC milling offers several benefits, such as:

Accuracy

  • Whether you're producing an initial prototype or final product, you can trust the item will match the measurements dictated in your CAD or CAM file. The computer numerical control reduces human error to nearly zero during machining. That level of precision gives you several advantages, including improved productivity and lowered material waste. It also maximizes your costs for machining the hardware.

Versatility

  • Vertical and horizontal CNC milling machines and multi-axis CNC mills are widely available and highly versatile. They can handle projects with varying complexities and parameters with precision. Also, many milling machines feature various accessories, such as through-spindle coolant, to assist with the machining and finishing processes.

Reproducibility

  • No matter how you apply CNC, you can consistently count on our machines to produce your product according to your CAD or CAM file. These advantages lead to benefits such as decreased waste and increased efficiency. Also, you need not worry about mass-producing a part in a larger order, even if it's more complicated.

Applications of CNC Milling Machines

Due to their versatility, CNC milling machines produce several items, including:

  • Prototypes
  • Ball joints
  • Brackets
  • Rollers
  • Spindles
  • Valve bodies
  • And more!
